From the CDC: While COVID-19 still poses a significant health threat to people at higher risk, its health impacts are now similar to other respiratory viruses, like the flu, which are also important causes of illness and death, especially for people at higher risk. As a result, this is the right time to issue unified Respiratory Virus Guidance, rather than additional guidance for each specific virus. What to Do When you Have or May Have a Respiratory Virus: Stay home and away from others (including people you live with who are not sick) if you have respiratory virus symptoms that aren't better explained by another cause. These symptoms can include fever, chills, fatigue, cough, runny nose, and headache, among others. You can go back to your normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, both are true: Your symptoms are getting better overall, and You have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication). When you go back to your normal activities, take added precaution over the next 5 days, such as taking additional steps for cleaner air, hygiene, masks, physical distancing, and/or testing when you will be around other people indoors. Keep in mind that you may still be able to spread the virus that made you sick, even if you are feeling better. You are likely to be less contagious at this time, depending on factors like how long you were sick or how sick you were. If you develop a fever or you start to feel worse after you have gone back to normal activities, stay home and away from others again until, for at least 24 hours, both are true: your symptoms are improving overall, and you have not had a fever (and are not using fever-reducing medication). Then take added precaution for the next 5 days.

K-8 Reconfiguration Data Collection Dear Orleans Central Supervisory Union Parents and Guardians; The Lake Region Elementary Middle School District Board is researching the possibility of implementing a grade band reconfiguration across our six K-8 schools for next year (August 2024). This process requires the review of data and various models in order to make a well-informed decision. If you want to follow the discussion, please go to the OCSU.org website and under the Board Option you will find board meeting agendas and minutes. One of the data points that must be collected is feedback and input from our families. If you have or will have a child(ren) in one of our K-8 schools during the 2024-2025 school year (from the towns of Albany, Barton, Brownington, Glover, Irasburg, Orleans and Westmore), please take a few minutes to complete this online survey. PLEASE use this link: https://forms.gle/9FCsmuvHJHG3hX6A9 If you are unable to complete it electronically, please stop in at one of our school’s offices or the Central Office on 130 Kinsey Road in Barton to fill out a paper copy. We appreciate your time and effort in this process. We need to collect all feedback and input from this survey by Wednesday, February 7th at 4:00 p.m. If you need assistance, feel free to contact any of the principal offices or call my office at 802-525-1204.

Get on Board! Pre-Board Candidate Training December 12, 2023 6:00-7:00pm The VT School Boards Association (VSBA) recognizes the value that diversity brings to school board governance. Therefore, VSBA is helping districts increase the number of qualified candidates who run for open seats and improve representation on boards. WHY? For a number of years there’s been a growing number of school districts that have had to fill board member vacancies via appointments rather than through the electoral process. By identifying resources, removing barriers and delivering information,VSBA hopes to encourage community members to consider engaging in the important service school boards provide. Please take this opportunity to learn how you can “get on board” and help make the decisions that will shape our children’s future. Do you want to get involved in OCSU by volunteering in the schools? Do you want to go on your child's field trip? Have you ever thought about substituting within OCSU? Have you found it difficult to get the process started? The Orleans County Sheriff's Dept (OCSD) and OCSU will be offering completion of the entire background check process as a one-stop shop to families and staff within OCSU. This will be held on 9/20/23 from 3:00pm - 6:00pm at COFEC - 130 Kinsey Road, Barton, VT 05822. Anyone who is interested in volunteering with us or becoming a substitute can attend. Those teachers who need BG checks for licensing can attend as well. If someone wants to volunteer in OCSU and is employed at another SU, they can come by and complete a secondary dissemination request with me if they have completed a BG check in the last three years. There will be no payment for the secondary dissemination request. ***Please note that if paying by check, you may need two checks, one for OCSU and one for OCSD. If you have questions, please reach out to Amber Hastings in Human Resources at ahastings@ocsu.org or via phone at 802-525-1204 x130.
